A. R. Rahman Education
He attended the Christian university in Madras. He received a full scholarship to the Trinity College of Music at Oxford University. When he later converted to Islam, he changed his name from A. S. Dileep Kumar to A. R. Rahman. His father’s sudden death caused his family to experience hardship. When he was just nine years old, he had to start working to support his family. He lived in a big, mixed family every day.
Modern technology has always piqued his interest, particularly when it comes to musical instruments. He began his career as a musician by playing on his father’s keyboard with well-known musicians like Raj Koti and Illaya Raja. He planned to enter computer engineering and received a perfect score on the board exams. Despite this, after facing some challenges in life, he started to follow his father’s advice and study music with Master Dhanraj. Operating a record player gave him his first monthly salary of fifty Indian Rupees (INR).
A. R. Rahman Early Life
The father of A. R. Rahman is R. K. Shekhar, a talented musician himself. His mother is Kareema Beegum, formerly Kasturi Shekhar. When Rahman was four years old, he began playing the piano; his father, R.K. Sekhar, was a well-known Tamil musician who wrote themes for the Malayalam film industry. The young man was able to continue his interest in electronics and computers while also developing an appreciation for music as a result of his father’s fortunate acquisition of a synthesiser.
Rahman’s father Sekhar passed away when he was nine years old, and by the time he was eleven, Rahman was working as a professional pianist to support his family. He dropped out of school, but the work experience he acquired afterward helped him secure a scholarship to Trinity College, Oxford, where he majored in Western classical music.

R. Rahman was a part of the Roots band when he initially began out (1984-88). He is a part of this ensemble and has contributed keyboard work to 10–12 Kannada movies. He later joined the group Nemesis Avenue. He previously worked with the band as a producer-arranger and performer for their “Jive live” event. In 1987, he started to write commercial music. Alwyn’s stylish new watch collection led to the first opportunity. He wrote the music for roughly 300 ads over the span of five years. In the midst of everything, he worked on the album “Colours” with notable artists including Shankar, Sivamani, and Zakir Hussain.
He was introduced to renowned filmmaker Mani Ratnam in 1991 by Sharada Trilok, a producer. Mani Ratnam was so enamoured with Rahman’s score for the movie Roja that it led to the composer’s big break (1992). His performance in the movie “Roja” catapulted him to popularity. He was included among the top-selling music artists of all time in 2004 with sales of nearly 200 million cassettes and 150 million recordings of his soundtracks.
Despite the fact that he had already achieved much in his life, he continued to learn and trained with people like Dakshinamurthy, N. Gopalakrishnan, Krishnan Nair, Nithyanandham, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Jacob John to hone his musical skills in the classical Hindustani, Carnatic, Qawwali, and Western styles. He collaborated with Sony Music to put out the album “Vande Mataram” in 1997 to commemorate India’s 50th anniversary of independence. It was the debut album by a South Asian musician for the brand.
