Yuvan made the decision to leave St. Bede’s Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai, India when he was in the tenth grade in order to pursue a career in music. He studied piano at the Musee Musical in Chennai and also under Master Jacob.

Jeeva and Ilaiyaraaja, Yuvan Shankar Raja’s parents, gave birth to him in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. His two older siblings, singer-composer Bhavatharini and composer Karthik Raja, likewise became musicians. His cousins are the composer Venkat Prabhu, the directors Premgi Amaren and Parthi Bhaskar, while his uncles and aunts are the filmmakers Gangai Amaran and R.D. Bhaskar, respectively.

His parents were cinema producer Jeeva Rajayya and composer Ilaiyaraaja. His mother died on October 31, 2011, a year ago. Both Karthik Raja (a composer) and Bhavatharini are his older siblings. His cousins are Venkat Prabhu and Premgi Amaren.

Yuvan Shankar Raja has worked as a composer on well over 100 Tamil movies during his career, garnering him praise for his versatility. He started his professional career at the young age of 16 by writing the music for an album. He later moved on to work in the Tamil music and film industries. Since then, he has been producing music, which has attracted a lot of attention and encouragement from music fans all over the world.

He created history in 2006 by becoming the first Indian composer to take home a prize from the Cyprus International Film Festival with his composition for Raam. He has composed the music for well over 100 films throughout the course of his 25-year career, making him one of the most sought-after composers in Tamil cinema. He has garnered the comparison to A.R. Rahman. He also owns the record company U1 Records in addition to YSR Films. Some of his more well-known pieces include Azhagai Irukkirai Bayamai Irukkirathu, 7G Rainbow Colony, and Paruthiveeran.
