Ratnam was born in Madhura, which is now Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, on June 2, 1956. He was a child of film director Ratnam Iyer. The University of Bombay, now known as Mumbai’s Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, is where Ratnam obtained her MBA. early 1980s, before I started working in the movie business. In 1983, he helmed Pallavi annu Pallavi, his first motion picture. His reputation as a talented director in Tamil cinema was cemented by the success of his 1986 film “Mouna Ragan: A Silent Symphony.”

At the time, he was working on the first Kannada film with his close friend Ravi Shankar, the son of filmmaker B. R. Panthulu. Later, with the assistance of his friends Raman, the son of director S. Balachander, and Ravi Shankar, Mani Ratnam completed his script. He left his position as a consultant to join the production crew, but the movie flopped and was ultimately shelved.

Despite his desire to become a filmmaker, he was dissatisfied with the Tamil cinema’s current output. However, he was awestruck by films like P. Bharathiraja (16 Vayathinile), K. Balachander (Apoorva Raagangal), J. Mahendran (Mullum Malarum), and Uthiripookkal (1979). He surrounded himself with people who shared his desire to enter into the film business at the time, including P. C. Sreeram, Santhana Bharathi, and P. Vasu.

He wrote the screenplay for the movie Pallavi. Anu Pallavi and his uncle Krishnamurthy agreed to all of his conditions in order to produce his film. His debut movie, which he directed, had people like Balu Mahendra, B. Lenin, Thotta Tharani, and Ilaiyaraaja in attendance. He received the Best Screenplay Award from the Karnataka State Government in 1983 for his work on this movie. N. G. John, a Malayalam film producer, saw his work and gave him the opportunity to direct the 1984 movie Unaru. G. Thyagarajan of Sathya Jyothi Films was given the opportunity to direct Pagal Nilavu, starring Murali and Revathi, in 1985.

In the years that followed, he directed numerous films in both Tamil and Hindi, including Mouna Ragam, Agni Natchathiram, Anjali, Roja, Dil Se (Hindi), O Kadhal Kanmani, and many others. He has received numerous honours for his efforts in movies, including three Bollywood Filmfare Awards and six Filmfare Awards South.
