With a degree in Visual Communication from the Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology in Chennai, he started working as an assistant director on the Enthiran and Nanban movies, which are remakes of the Hindi film 3 Idiots, when he was just 19 years old. His short film Mugaputhagam received a warm reception from viewers across all media. In 2013, Atlee made his directing debut with the romantic comedy Raja Rani, which was produced by AR Murugadoss, Fox Star Studios, and Next Big Films and starred Arya, Jai, Nayanthara, Nazriya Nazim, and Sathyaraj. Raja Rani generated over 150 crores in revenue, winning him the Best Debut Director honour at the Vijay Awards.

The director and his production firm, Sri Thenandal Films, also enjoyed economic success with the films that came after, Theri and Mersal. Shah Rukh Khan starred in his debut Hindi-language film as a director, Jawan. The news of Thalapathy Vijay’s appearance in the Jawan movie generated a lot of attention. Images of Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan from the movie Jawan instantly went viral online.
