Rajkumar Santoshi Biography

Rajkumar Santoshi Education

Rajkumar dropped out of high school (XI std.) to help his father with his filmmaking. Regarding the institution he graduated from to complete his primary education, not much is known.

Rajkumar Santoshi Early Life

Rajkumar Santoshi was a son of director P.L. Santoshi, who also gave actors Dev Anand and O.P. Nayyar opportunities and supported playback singer Kishore Kumar. His father served as an assistant director on Raj Kapoor’s films Sargam and Barsaat Ki Raat.

When Rajkumar Santhoshi’s father remarried, he had a son who was born in Chennai and was given the name Rajkumar. When his father moved to Chennai to direct Tamil films, his parents eventually fell in love and got married. His father did not divorce his first wife because bigamy was accepted at the time. Santhoshi was born and raised in Chennai, where he saw M.G. (he considered his hometown then). Later, their family relocated to Mumbai and made themselves at home there. Ram and Tanisha, his children, and his wife Manila currently reside with him.

Rajkumar Santoshi Career

He developed after the death of his father and collaborated with Robin Dharamraj on the movie Chakra. He so embarked on his journey to becoming a filmmaker. Before going to work as an assistant director for Govind Nihalani, he was a producer for Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

Rajkumar received significant recognition with his debut movie, “Ghayal” (1990), for which he received credit as both writer and director. Sunny or Kamal Haasan were candidates for Santoshi to use as Ghayal. But after personally meeting Sunny Deol, the actor Dharmendra volunteered to produce the movie because Sunny liked the plot. After the success of “Ghayal,” Santoshi directed the women-only movie “Damini” (1993), which won Sunny Deol the National Film Award for best supporting actor. Many people consider this to be Meenakshi Seshadri’s best movie to date.

The movie Ghayal was translated into Tamil, Telugu, and Oriya because it does a great job of capturing the fight of a woman for equality in a patriarchal society. For his work on this movie, Santoshi received the Filmfare Director of the Year Award. The 1994 movie Andaz Apna Apna, in which he starred Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, was a box office failure. He gave us our first glimpse of Rajesh Khanna’s daughter Twinkle Khanna and Booby Deol, another child of Dharmendra, in the 1995 movie “Barsaat.” Kamal Haasan was supposed to star in his 1996 film “Ghatak,” but Sunny Deol and Meenakshi Seshadri took his place. Sunny, however, continued to appear in the film when Haasan left for unknown reasons. Despite being Meenakshi Seshadri’s final film, it was a great box office hit. Later, Rajkumar worked as a co-producer on the movie “Doli Saja Ke Rakhna” alongside Akshaye Khanna and Jyothika. The film was directed by Priyadarshan. Additionally, he produced the underwhelming movie Jaanam Samjha Karo.

Rajkumar directed nationalistic films later in his career, including “Pukar,” for which Anil Kapoor received the National Film Award for best actor. The best movie on independence warrior Bhagat Singh’s career, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, was released in 2002. The movie received two national honours.

He also directed Rajkumar’s movie, which went on to become a huge box office hit. “Phata Poster Nikhla Hero,” a 2013 movie he directed with Shahid Kapoor and Ileana D’Cruz, received negative and positive reviews.

Ram and Tanisha are two of Rajkumar’s children from his marriage to Manila. He is currently writing the script for the film “Fateh Singh,” which stars Ajay Devgan.
