Dibakar Banerjee Education
Bal Bharati Public School was where he studied. He enrolled at Ahmedabad’s National Institute of Design after graduating from high school to study visual communications and graphic design, but he left after two and a half years.
Dibakar Banerjee Early Life
Dibakar Banerjee was raised in the New Rohtak Road neighborhood of West Delhi. After giving up his studies and returning to New Delhi, he performed some temporary work for Sam Mathews, an audiovisual filmmaker.
Richa Puranesh, his wife, has a wealth of experience in the FMCG sector, and the couple lived in Delhi for a long time. After Khosla Ka Ghosla’s success, they moved to Parel in Mumbai with their two kids.
Dibakar Banerjee Career
Banerjee began his career as a copywriter at Shems Combit, TBWA Anthem. He later joined Contract Advertising in Delhi, where he worked alongside the firm’s then-creative director, Pradeep Sarkar. He would later collaborate with screenwriter Jaideep Sahni to create the plot, narrative, and songs for the movie Khosla Ka Ghosla. He left Contract in 1997 to start a production company called Watermark with two of his former NID friends, where the three of them would develop advertisements for well-known companies like Channel V and MTV.
Together with his friend and former coworker Jaideep Sahni, he co-wrote the screenplay for his debut feature film, Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006), which stars Anupam Kher and Boman Irani and was filmed in and around New Delhi. The film was favourably welcomed by critics and viewers alike and won the National Film Award. With this movie, Banerjee joined the group of emerging filmmakers who were responsible for a significant divergence from the typical Mumbai-centric themes that characterise Bollywood.
Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008), Banerjee’s second feature, was again shot in and around his home city of Delhi, and he collaborated with a number of other directors on the production. The International Film Festival of India in Goa and the Museum of Modern Art in New York hosted the global premieres of this movie, which also stars Abhay Deol, Neetu Chandra, and Paresh Rawal. It debuted the weekend after the 2008 Mumbai attacks and quickly gained popularity. Rachel Saltz, a critic for the New York Times, described the movie as “a zippy blend of humour and realism.” In terms of well-known movies, Oye Lucky! Oh, luck! brought the gold home.
The first Indian movie to be shot entirely on a digital camera and presented in found footage style was Banerjee’s 2010 release Love Sex Aur Dhokha. The movie was screened using a variety of cameras, including Handycams, CCTV cameras, and mobile cameras. The movie, which addresses taboo subjects like sting operations, MMS scandals, and honour killings, had its debut on March 19, 2010, to positive reviews and strong box office performance. It received four out of five stars from CNN-IBN reviewer Rajeev Masand, who termed it “the most riveting Hindi film in recent memory.”
The political drama Shanghai (2012), which was directed by Banerjee and was about the murder of a social activist, was his following film. The movie, which included actors including Kalki Koechlin, Emraan Hashmi, and Abhay Deol, was adapted from Vassilis Vassilikos’ 1967 Greek novel Z. Shanghai had its world premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival before becoming on sale to the general public on June 8 of same year.
Patol Babu, Film Star, a short story by Satyajit Ray that starred Nawazuddin Siddiqui, was adapted by Banerjee for Bombay Talkies in 2013. Aside from Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, and Anurag Kashyap, there were four directors that worked on the anthology. This movie was created to celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema. Critics praised Bombay Talkies, especially Banerjee’s story, saying that Dibakar “narrates his story with such tenderness and Siddiqui is so wonderful that by the end, I was wiping away tears.” Anupama Chopra stated in her review.
Next, Banerjee transformed Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s fictional character Byomkesh Bakshi into Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! The movie in which Sushant Singh Rajput plays the lead was co-produced by Yash Raj Films and his own production firm, Dibakar Banerjee Productions. The movie, which is set in Kolkata in the 1940s, had its debut on April 3 to mostly positive reviews.
Titli, the debut film directed by Love Sex Aur Dhokha co-writer Kanu Behl, was produced by Banerjee and Yash Raj Films. This movie will be shown in Un Certain Regard, a competition category at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. It was officially released in India on October 30, 2015. He and 11 other filmmakers returned their National Awards for their films Khosla ka Ghosla and Gangaajal in the same month to protest the choice of Gajendra Chauhan to lead FTII.
2018 saw Banerjee work with Kashyap, Akhtar, and Johar once more on the anthology movie Lust Stories. Its stories, which were based on the concept of lust, were told from the perspective of women. Manisha Koirala and Sanjay Kapoor appeared in Banerjee’s tale. The movie debuted on Netflix on June 15, 2018.
