Sanjay Leela Bhansali was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, on February 24, 1963. He received Padma Shri in 2015 from the Indian government in recognition of his accomplishments. He was born into the Gujarati Kshatriya (Solanki) caste; his parents were the film producer Navin Bhansali and the seamstress Leela Bhansali. Bela Segal is the name of his sister.

The choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant and him were previously engaged, but their relationship ended.

After completing his studies, Sanjay started working as an assistant director. He collaborated with director Vidhu Vinod Chopra on the movies 1942: A Love Story and Parinda. Although Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), which he wrote and directed, went poorly commercially, it received high marks for its subject matter. His second film as a filmmaker, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, premiered in the Indian Panorama category of the International Film Festival of India in 1999 and earned a great deal of praise.

His third film, Devdas (2002), had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002 and is India’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. His film Black took home an astounding eleven Filmfare awards in 2005.

Alongside Shilpa Shetty and Farah Khan, he served as a judge on the dance reality series Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 1 in 2006. In 2011, he served in the same capacity on the music talent competition X Factor India.

In 2008, he oversaw the opera Padmavati’s production. The piece received fifteen minutes of standing ovation and seven curtain calls on its world premieres at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy, and Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, respectively. He handled all aspect of the 2010 film Guzaarish, including the writing, directing, producing, and even the music. As the first Hindi film ever to be screened on opening night of the Toronto International Film Festival, his 2014 film Mary Kom created history.

He produced the popular Hindi TV series Saraswatichandra in 2013, however he gave up after just a few episodes. His 2015 film Bajirao Mastani ended up being one of the highest-grossing Indian movies of all time and was showcased at the Indian Panorama section of the 2016 International Film Festival of India.
