On February 13, 1979, Kunaal Roy Kapur was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, to Punjabi parents. His grandfather, film producer Raghupat Roy Kapur, eventually made Mumbai his home. His parents are Salome Roy Kapur and Kumud Roy Kapur. Salome entered the 1972 Miss India pageant.
Kunal is the middle brother of the three. His older brother Siddharth Roy Kapur is the president and CEO of Roy Kapur Films and a film producer. He is well-known for having married the well-known actress Vidya Balan in addition to his acting career. His younger brother, Bollywood actor Aditya Roy Kapur, is also well-known.
