Movie Verdict
Darlings is a hilariously dark comedy about social problems that are still with us today. As a societal system, patriarchy has existed for millions of years and is still evident today in many Indian homes. A middle-class family film about a woman who is so fed up with her husband’s intransigence that she intends to exact her vengeance by torturing him into submission, after having exhausted all other avenues of persuasion.
There is something in this 2 hours and 14-minute-long film that will appeal to every type of viewer. The movie is a wild trip because of the many plot twists and excellent acting from the leads. We are not giving many specifics since there are stunning and unexpected situations in it that will grab your attention and are best seen on the big screen.
Alia Bhatt delivers yet another stellar turn as Badru. Sometimes she seems innocent, sometimes angry, and sometimes just plain frustrated. As impressive as Alia Bhatt is in the film, Shefali Shah is also a highlight. Malayalam actor Roshan Matthew lived up to his part, and Vijay Varma did a fine job. Everyone else played their part admirably.
The film looks and sounds great. Vishal Bhardwaj and Prashant Pillai’s score is effective and appropriate to the film’s mood and events. Considering the constraints of the budget and the number of available locales, Anil Mehta did a respectable job behind the camera. The director, Jasmeet K. Reen, does an excellent job of addressing a social issue while also adding a layer of dark humor that will resonate with viewers.
Darlings, in the end, is a fascinating black comedy with outstanding performances from its main characters.
