He went to Emmanuel’s in Kothanalloor for high school. He completed his prerequisite coursework at Mannanam’s Kuriakose Elias College before transferring to Mysore’s St. Philomena’s College to complete his BSc. He pursued advanced degrees in the theatre and film because he was passionate about them, first receiving an M.A. in theatre arts from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, and then an M.Phil. in theatre arts from Mahatma Gandhi University.

Pothan’s first position in the business was as an assistant director on the set of the 2010 movie 9 KK Road. He made his playing debut as a film director in Aashiq Abu’s 2011 film Salt N’ Pepper. He served as the chief assistant director for the 2014 film Tamaar Padaar, which he co-directed with Dileesh Nair.

He made his movie debut in Lal Jose’s Chandranudikunna Dikkil (1999), a film that served as his introduction to the business. Later, he landed his first significant acting role in Salt N’ Pepper.
