Dulquer Salmaan Career

In 2011, Salmaan accepted to play the role of gangster Harilal in Second Show (2012), Srinath Rajendran’s debut film. In an interview, Salmaan explained that he made a “unconventional introduction with a group of rookies” on purpose because he thinks that “…when an actor debuts, he has to earn the right to be a hero and not obtain it through a fast method.” There were conflicting reactions to the film. Salmaan was panned by Rediff’s Paresh C. Palicha, but praised by Sify’s reviewer: “… it is Salmaan’s strong screen presence and a matured acting technique that makes the movie an entertaining watch.” He won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut because the film was a commercial success.

After that, Salmaan appeared in Ustad Hotel, also by Anwar Rasheed (2012). It earned a National Film Award for Best Popular Film Offering Wholesome Entertainment and was a tremendous financial success. His portrayal of Faizy also won him praise. According to Anil R Nair’s piece in The New Indian Express, the young and flashy Dulquer has escaped from his father’s shadow in the part of Faisi. Salmaan received his first ever nomination for a Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his work in this film.

Roopesh Peethambaran’s third feature film was the crime thriller Theevram. Singing “Johnny Mone Johnny” for the first time on screen in Martin Prakkat’s comedy drama ABCD: American-Born Confused Desi in 2013, he landed a role in the film. This film, released in the fall of 2012, was met with widespread critical acclaim, and it performed poorly at the box office. Both the song and the film became huge hits. Despite the film’s mixed reviews, his performance was universally lauded.

Sify commented, “It is Dulquer Salmaan’s show all the way, and in all honesty the young actor has given his heart and soul into his character” in reference to his performance in Amal Neerad’s segment Kullante Bharya from the anthology film 5 Sundarikal (2013). Critics praised the film, with a spotlight on Kullante Bharya. Critic Aswin J. Kumar of The Times of India praised Salmaan’s performance as a disabled photographer, writing, “… it’s the tale of the unnamed woman, ‘Kullante Bharya,’ that sticks with the spectator.” Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi, a road movie starring Salmaan and Sameer Thahir, followed (2013). The audience responded positively to both the film and his performance. In the 2013 romance drama Pattam Pole, Salmaan played the lead role opposite Malavika Mohanan, who was making her acting debut at the time. The film was directed by Alagappan. There was a lack of success at the box office for this film.
