In Machilipatnam, Jagapathi Babu was born to veteran producer and director V. B. Rajendra Prasad. Born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, he eventually found his way into Telugu films. In Hyderabad, Telangana, at Chaitanya College, Jagapati Babu earned a degree in philosophy.

She made her film debut in the Telugu film Simha Swapnam (1989), which her father produced and was directed by V. Madhusudhan Rao. His debut film, Peddarikam (1992), was a critical and financial success. Gaayam, Ram Gopal Varma’s breakthrough film, was released in 1993.

It wasn’t until the release of the 1994 hit Subha Lagnam that he was able to break through to the family audience and become a household name. He won the 1996 Nandi Award for Best Actor for his role in S V Krishna Reddy’s Maavichiguru. Two of the featured films, Subhakankshalu and Pelli Pandiri, were both huge successes in 1997.
