At this time, Mammootty was steadily moving up the corporate ladder. His name was recorded as “Sajin” in the credits of the 1981 film Sphodanam (directed by P. G. Viswambharan), which he also acted in. While Sphodanam was being filmed, he had a leg injury. Munnettam, his next movie, was made by Sreekumaran Thampi. In the same year, he and Ratheesh both took part in the I.V. Sasi-directed movie Thrishna. With this movie, Mammootty received his first substantial break as a solo hero. In 1981, he received his first state honour for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Ahimsa. He performed Aalkkoottathil Thaniye and Adiyozhukkukal in the same year.

He made his acting debut in 1982 as a police officer in Yavanika, one of the best detective thrillers ever filmed in Malayalam cinema, directed by K. G. George. Yavanika was a critical and commercial success. Additional important movies that were released in 1982 included Padayottam and Ee Nadu. The latter was a commercial success and had the biggest box office receipts for a South Indian movie at the time. It was the first Malayalam movie with a budget over 1 crore (US$130,000), and Mammootty’s first film in which he played a negative role.

Padayottam was the first Indian film produced entirely in India and shot on a 70 mm camera. In 1984, the same name was given to the remakes of Ee Nadu in Telugu, Idhu Enga Naadu in Tamil, and Yeh Desh in Hindi. In the 1983 movie Sandhyakku Virinja Poovu, he worked with director P. G. Viswambharan and played the role of Jayamohan, a lawyer.
