Mammootty was born on September 7, 1953, in Chempu, Kerala, India, and went to the Maharaja’s College in Ernakulam. He eventually enrolled and obtained a law degree from Ernakulam Government Law College. Mammootty received his first acting break in the comedy Anubhavangal Paalichakal in 1971 while still a student at Maharaja’s College. Famous authors K. G. George and M. T. Vasudevan Nair both played key roles in promoting Mammootty’s career in the film industry.
“Thrishna,” his first movie as a hero, was directed by I.V. Sasi. Mammootty’s life changed when the movies Vilkanundu Swapnangal, Mela, and Yavanika gained him widespread recognition for his acting prowess. The ease with which Mammootty has played roles in both art house and mainstream movies is what really sets him apart. Due to the films of luminaries in the business like M. T. Vasudevan Nair, K.G. George, Padmarajan, P.N. Menon, and Bharathan, Mammootty quickly rose to renown.
Following this, Mammootty’s skills were sought after by well-known filmmakers including Adoor Gopalakrishnan, T. V. Chandran, and Pavithran. Additionally, it was remarked that the combination of M.T. and I.V. Sasi was particularly effective in Mammootty’s flicks. The Joshy-directed movie New Delhi, which was adapted from Irving Wallace’s book The Almighty, was a significant turning point in Mammootty’s life and career. Mammootty portrayed a journalist who has the guts to exact retribution after being duped by politicians. The success of this film marked the beginning of Mammootty’s climb to prominence.
