Mohanlal Biography
Mohanlal Education
After graduating from Mahatma Gandhi College with a degree in commerce, he taught at Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram. It wasn’t until Mohanlal was in the sixth grade that he made his stage debut, playing the role of a ninety-year-old man in a stage production of Computer Boy. In 1977 and 1978, he took first place in the state wrestling tournament of Kerala.
Mohanlal Early Life
Mohanlal Viswanathan was born in the Keralan village of Elanthoor in the Pathanamthitta district on May 21st, 1960. He is the youngest son of former Kerala official and Law Secretary Viswanathan Nair and Santhakumari. Pyarelal was his elder brother (died in 2000, during a military exercise). Mohanlal spent his childhood at Mudavanmugal, a neighbourhood in Thiruvananthapuram where his family lived.
Mohanlal had his acting debut in the Malayalam film Thiranottam when he was just 18 years old, but the film wasn’t shown to the public for another 25 years due to censorship concerns. In the love film Manjil Virinja Pookkal, released in 1980, he made his acting debut playing the villain. The years that followed saw him move up to supporting parts while maintaining his nasty persona. The release of the crime drama Rajavinte Makan in 1986 catapulted his reputation, following a string of successful film appearances that year.
Mohanlal Career
Mohanlal starred in his first film, 1978’s Thiranottam, which he co-produced and directed with a group of friends including Maniyanpilla Raju, Suresh Kumar, Unni, Priyadarshan, and Ravi Kumar. Mohanlal played the role of Kuttappan, an incompetent servant who suffered from mental impairments. Censorship issues caused the film’s release to be delayed. In total, it took 25 years to get this movie out to the public. Fazil’s debut feature film, Manjil Virinja Pookkal, premiered in 1980, and featured Mohanlal as the film’s primary antagonist. This film ended up being a smashing success.
Mohanlal’s friends had applied for him to Navodaya Studio after seeing an ad. He auditioned for the position in front of a panel of seasoned directors. Both of the others gave him low marks due of their dislike of his appearance, while Fazil and Jijo Appachan gave him high marks (90 and 95, respectively).
In a 2012 interview with Reader’s Digest, Mohanlal speculated that his youthful good looks might have mirrored the antagonist. By 1983, Mohanlal had already starred in almost 25 features, the vast majority of which cast him in evil roles. Ente Mohangal Poovaninju, Iniyengilum, Visa, Attakkalasham, Kaliyil Alpam Karyam, Ente Mamattukkuttiyammakku, Engane Nee Marakkum, Unaru, and Sreekrishna Parunthu helped him transform into a more mainstream star.
