Priyadarshan Biography

Priyadarshan Education

Priyadarshan graduated with a Master of Arts in Philosophy from University College Trivandrum after attending Government Model School in Trivandrum.

Priyadarshan Early Life

He married the actress Lissy on December 13, 1990. The couple’s children, actress Kalyani and actor Sidharth, divorced in 2016.

The fact that Priyadarshan’s father was a college librarian contributed to his passion of reading. He devoured books in his younger years, and as a college student, he started writing sketches and short plays for All India Radio. He was influenced by the films of P. Venu. Back then, he was close friends with Mohanlal, M. G. Sreekumar, Suresh Kumar, Sanal Kumar, Jagadish, Maniyanpilla Raju, and Ashok Kumar.

Mohanlal began his career in the film industry at that time. In an effort to succeed in the movie industry, they all moved to Chennai at the same time. With Mohanlal’s encouragement, Priyadarshan was given the chance to work as an assistant scriptwriter on a few movies. He quickly started writing his own scripts, several of which went on to become commercial successes. He was forced to go back to Kerala.

Priyadarshan Career

For the past 40 years, Priyadarshan has worked in Indian cinema as a director and screenwriter. Nearly 90 of his films were directed, mostly in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu, four of the five main Indian languages.

In 1984, Priyadarshan and his friends Suresh Kumar and Sanal Kumar decided to make a movie with the help of renowned movie producer Thiruvenkadam. Shankar, the marketable hero, helped them. The parallel hero part was cast with Shankar and Mohanlal, a rising star at the time. So, in 1984, Priyadarshan made his acting debut in the surprisingly popular Poochakkoru Mookkuthi. A 100-day run of this low-budget slapstick comedy has now come to an end in theatres all around Kerala.

1988 was a pivotal year for Priyadarshan as his career took off. He directed Vellanakalude Nadu, starring Mohanlal, based on a Sreenivasan tale. This movie’s main themes included corruption, the land mafia, and other social issues. This film was by far Priyadarshan’s biggest commercial success up to that point. Aryan, an action movie by T. Damodaran about the Mumbai underworld, then played for 150 days in theatres. Even Chithram, Priyadarshan’s highest-grossing movie to date, was released that year (1988).

The release of Hera Pheri in Hindi in 2000 fundamentally changed Priyadarshan’s career trajectory. Hera Pheri, the Bollywood version of the 1989 Malayalam blockbuster Ramjirao Speaking, was a huge box office hit. This Hindi film, which stars Paresh Rawal, Tabu, Sunil Shetty, and Akshay Kumar, has become a classic. The movie also served as a launching pad for the careers of directors Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar, who have since worked together on a number of well-received movies. After his breakout performance in Hera Pheri, Paresh Rawal established himself as a mainstay in Priyadarshan films.

Early in 2018, he started organizing the shooting of Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, an enthralling historical film in the Malayalam language with a 16th-century setting. The naval leader Kunjali Marakkar IV of the Zamorin of Calicut served as the model for the Mohanlal-starring movie. The Kunjali Marakkars constructed the first naval defence on the Indian coast by holding Calicut against the Portuguese for over a century. The movie was eventually released to the general public on December 2, 2022. The movie was derided by reviewers and flopped at the box office.
