Mr. R. Balakrishnan, also known as “R. Balki,” was born in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, India, on April 16, 1964.
He had been interested in studying filmmaking for as long as he could remember, and before quitting on the panel, he even went through the Madras Film Institute’s interview process.
Gauri Shinde and Balki have been wed since 2007. She has experience in advertising and is the film’s writer, director, and producer.

R. Balki is a filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer best known for his work in Bollywood. His movies have won a lot of praise from critics. He made a name for himself with his first film, Cheeni Kum (2007), then went on to have even more success with Paa. R. Balki started his career at the tender age of 23, and today is recognised as the former Group Chairman of Lowe Lintas, one of the most renowned and significant advertising agencies in India.
He had always been interested in filmmaking despite working for the agency, and even applied to the Madras Film Institute in an effort to pursue directing while he was a student. He left the interview panel in the middle of the process, therefore he didn’t enrol in the school. He later tried to pursue a Masters in Computer Applications (MCA) post-baccalaureate degree, but he was booted from school after just three years due to his repeated absences.
After replying to a Mudra advertisement he saw in the newspaper, he first started working in advertising. He created advertisements for Surf Excel and the Idea Cellular network that were huge hits, such as “Daag Achche Hain” and “Walk when you Talk,” respectively. After working at ad agencies for a while, R. Balki’s career took a significant leap when he directed his first full-length movie, Cheeni Kum (2007). The movie was positively received by audiences and critics alike.
After Cheeni Kum’s commercial success, R. Balki reteamed with Amitabh Bachchan for 2009’s Paa, which went on to become one of Balki’s most critically lauded productions. The movie received not just favourable reviews but also did quite well at the box office. The director took a sabbatical from directing films after 2009, but he made a comeback with Shamitabh (2015), making it a perfect three for three when it came to teaming up with Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan. He also directed Dear Zindagi (2016), a hit movie, and the biographical drama Pad Man (2018), starring Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte, and Sonam Kapoor.
