R. Velraj Education

On October 21, 1969, Velraj was born in Thirunagar, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India under the astrological sign of Libra. He had previously attended the PKN Boys Higher Secondary School in Thirunagar. After finishing high school, Velraj joined at Madurai Sourashtra College in Madurai, India, where he completed his undergraduate studies.

He always knew he wanted to be a photographer, and in college he was able to establish the necessary contacts to start working as Tirru’s assistant on some Tamil movies. The two even shared an “Aalavandhan.” With the release of the movie “Shaheed” on March 23rd, 1931, he made his film debut in Hindi. Our all-time favourite comedy, “Phir Hera Pheri,” was released after “Supari.” For the movie Polladhavan, he won the 2007 Vijay Award for Best Cinematographer. He worked on two Malayalam-language movies, “Malabar Wedding” and “Kandhar.”.

He began his career as a cinematographer’s assistant, working with Tirru on a number of Tamil movies, including Aalavandhan. Actor Dhanush suggested Velraj to director Vetrimaaran so that they could collaborate on the movie Polladhavan, for which Velraj later won the Vijay Award for Best Cinematographer. Their most recent collaborations, Aadukalam and Asuran, were produced as a result of Velraj and Vetrimaaran’s ongoing cooperation. His debut as a director was Velaiilla Pattadhari, which starred Dhanush and Amala Paul and had music by Anirudh. For his work on this film, Velraj won numerous awards for best first-time director. He directed his second movie, Thanga Magan, which debuted in 2015. In the Indian filmmaking scene, Velraj is a prominent member.

He appeared briefly as a guest star in the movies “Pugazh” and “Naan Rajavaga Pogiren,” both of which he acted in. “Velaiyilla Pattathari,” his debut feature film, won the SIIMA Award for Best Debut Director in 2014. He directed his second feature in 2015, “Thangamagan.” He wrote the scripts for both of his two successful directing projects.
