He made his debut in the Hindi film industry in 2004 as an associate director on Anurag Kashyap’s crime drama Black Friday. The Indian Censor Board postponed the release of the movie until 2007 because of the contentious nature of the movie.
Raj served as an assistant director on Anurag Kashyap’s 2007 production of the fantasy mystery drama No Smoking. His debut movie, Aamir (2008), received high praise from critics and told the story of a young Muslim man who spends a day at the mercy of Islamic fanatics plotting to bomb the city. Both viewers and critics found much to admire in the movie.
