During her stay at college, Rakul started working as a model and eventually landed a supporting role in the Kannada movie Gilli. She participated in the 2011 Femina Miss India competition and won four titles: Miss Talented, Miss Fresh Face, Miss Beautiful Smile, and Miss Beautiful Eyes.

Rakul Preet Singh started her modeling career while still a college student, and she made her acting debut in the movie Kannada Gilli (2009). She participated in the 2011 Femina Miss India pageant, finishing fifth overall and taking home five awards (Miss Talented Female, Femina Miss Beautiful Eyes, Femina Miss Beautiful Smile, and Miss Indiatimes People’s Choice).
She then made the decision to make acting her career, and the following year she made her acting debut in the Tamil film Thadaiyara Thaakka as well as the Telugu film Keratam. Her 2014 Bollywood debut, Yaariyan, received more favorable reviews.
