Rao Ramesh was born on May 25, 1968, to two actors in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh. His father, also named Rao Gopal Rao, was an actor as well. He spent his formative years there. His primary and secondary schooling were both completed at Sri Ramakrishna Mission School in T. Nagar. He studied communications in college before deciding to become a still photographer. After that, he moved to Bangalore to study under cinematographer and K. Raghavendra Rao’s younger sibling, K. S. Prakasa Rao.

His intended television debut in a series directed by South Indian veteran Ghantasala Ratna Kumar was cancelled somewhere around 2001 or 2002. Subsequently, he appeared as a special guest on well-known Telugu TV programmes like “Pavithra Bandham” and “Kalavari Kodalu.” His breakthrough role was in the 2002 Telugu film Seema Simham, when he played Hema’s brother.

He got his start as the cinematographer’s assistant for K. S. Prakasa Rao, the brother of K. Raghavendra Rao. For the next seven years after his father’s death, he focused on caring for his family. He made his acting debut in a Telugu TV serial directed by Ghantasala Ratna Kumar after his mother pushed him to do so; however, the show’s production was delayed due to schedule difficulties. Meanwhile, he was offered a role as Simran’s sibling in a Balakrishna film that ultimately bombed.

After that, he moved to Chennai, where he spent the next four and a half years appearing in a staggering 999 television episodes, including popular shows like Pavitra Bandham and Kalavari Kodalu. The movie Okkadunnadu, in which he had a little role, premiered in 2007. His breakout role as a repentant Naxalite in Krish’s 2008 film Gamyam earned him widespread acclaim. Following his success in S. S. Rajamoul’s Magadheera, he moved on to act in films such as Kotha Bangaru Lokam (2008) and Avakai Biryani (2008). His supporting role acting skills were in high demand in the early 2010s.
