Ravi grew up in Maduranthakam as the seventh child of Kunjan Pillai and Padmini Amma. Ramachandra Babu, Ravi’s older brother and a cinematographer, studied at the Pune Film Institute in the 1970s and had a big impact on him. Ravi was exposed to the new wave of French cinema while growing up in the 1970s and became familiar with filmmakers like Truffaut and Gordard. Chandra helped his brother, cinematographer Ramachandra Babu ISC, and later his friend and fellow filmmaker Rajiv Menon on a few Malayalam movies to get experience in the field. Ravi has had a long and illustrious career in front of the camera, starting as an assistant cameraman on the Malayalam film Kilukkampetti and progressing to his directing work on the critically acclaimed movie Virasat, for which he won multiple honours.

He was an early adopter of these technologies in Indian film, using the akila crane, kino flo lights, mole beams, hawk lenses, sky panels, star lights, and space lights, among others.
