On October 3, 1954, Sathyaraj, whose birth name was Rangaraj, was born to Dr. Subbiah and Nathambal. Roopa Senapathy and Kalpana Mandradiar are his two younger sisters. He adores Rajesh Khanna and M. G. Ramachandran, two of his favorite actors.

Sathyaraj completed his elementary education at St. Mary’s Convent School before transferring to Suburban High School in Ramnagar, also in Coimbatore, for his high school education. He graduated from Government Arts College in Coimbatore with a BS in botany. Sathyaraj’s mother sternly forbade him from pursuing a career in acting, despite his desire to do so.

Between 1978 and 1982, he mainly played minor villain roles as M. N. Nambiar’s henchmen while stars like Sivaji Ganesan, Jaishankar, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, and Vijayakanth dominated the screen. In 1984, Sathyaraj’s college friend Manivannan directed the Tamil movie January 1, in which Sathyaraj played a supporting role. Sathyaraj starred in the lead role in 18 of Manivannan’s approximately 25 films that he directed between 1984 and 2013.
