He is best known for his work in the Kannada film industry. He is the son of Rajkumar, the oldest actor. Shiva went to a drama school in Chennai after getting his degree from the University of Madras in 1983. This was at the suggestion of the director K. Balachander. He joined Anand in the movie business after learning Kuchipudi dance from Vempetti Chinni Sathyam in Chennai while he was in college.
Shiva married Geeta, who was the daughter of a former prime minister of Karnataka named S. Bangarappa. The couple has two daughters. Their names are Niveditha and Nirupama. He was given an honorary doctorate by Sri Krishnadevaraya Vijayanagara University.
