He was one of five children; his father also had four brothers and a sister. Akkineni Ramesh Prasad, the son of L. V. Prasad, is a distant relative of his. His son, Akshay Akkineni, is the director of Pizza. He married P. S. Keerthana, whose parents are R. Parthiban and Seetha. For her work as a child actress in Sreekar’s 2002 film Kannathil Muthamittal, for which she won the National Film Award, Sreekar was the film’s editor.

Sreekar Prasad earned his degree in literature from the University of Madras. His father was a film editor in Telugu, and he learned much of what he knew from him.
