He was one of five children; his father also had four brothers and a sister. Akkineni Ramesh Prasad, the son of L. V. Prasad, is a distant relative of his. His son, Akshay Akkineni, is the director of Pizza. He married P. S. Keerthana, whose parents are R. Parthiban and Seetha. For her work as a child actress in Sreekar’s 2002 film Kannathil Muthamittal, for which she won the National Film Award, Sreekar was the film’s editor.

Yodha (1992), Nirnayam (1995), Vanaprastham (1999), Alaipayuthey (2000), Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Kannathil Muthamittal (2002), Okkadu (2003), Aaytha Ezhuthu/Yuva (2004), Navarasa (2005), Anandabhadram (2005), and Guru (2006) are only some of the films that Sreekar Prasad edited that went (2015).

From his father, he acquired the ins and outs of film editing for Telugu cinema. Even though he got his start in Telugu movies, it was his roles in Malayalam and Tamil that made him a household name.
