A young M. S. Raju developed an early interest in cinema. He finished school and then got a friend to help him break into the movie business. His 1987 film Manavadostunnadu starred Arjun and Sobhana, and he directed it. His father’s reputation helped him attract investors.

S. Raju’s father, Rayaparaju, owned hundreds of acres of land in what was formerly the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. After liquidating his holdings in Bangalore, Rayaparaju uprooted to Madras. Arjuna Raju, the producer of the Roja Movies, is his father’s cousin. After becoming a producer because of him, his father made about five or six films.

The new production firm was named “Sumanth Arts” in his son’s honour. The first film to be released under the label was Sathruvu (1991), which was directed by Kodi Ramakrishna and starred Venkatesh, Vijayashanti, and Kota Srinivasa Rao. After M. S. Raju came up with the main concept for the film, Satyamurthy fleshed out the plot details. The film was also dubbed into Tamil. Sathruvu was an immensely popular film in both Telugu and Tamil.
