Chowta was born in Nigeria and raised there before moving to Bangalore, India. His father is D. K. Chowta, a well-known author and businessman from Tulu. His sister is the anthropologist Prajna Chowta.

Sandeep Chowta, an Indian film composer, is best recognized for his work in the Telugu and Bollywood film industry. Additionally, he oversees Columbia Records’ activities in India.
