Salim Merchant Early Life

Salim Merchant was born in Mumbai on March 3, 1974, which is 45 years ago in 2019. His family comes from Mundra, which is a district of Kutch in the Indian state of Gujarat. Salim went to London’s Trinity College of Music after graduating from high school to enhance his piano playing. After that, he went to Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Delhi to study the harmonium. Salim started his start in business by creating “jingles” for television commercials. Midway through the 1990s, he started producing music for pop performers including Voodoo Rapper, Style Bhai, Shweta Shetty, and Jasmine Bharucha while also breaking into the genre as a performer. He and his brother received their first Bollywood gig in 1997 when they were tasked with creating the “Background Score” for the movie “Hameshaa.” He also wrote the score for the movie “Ghaath” after that. The two artists experienced rapid success after they contributed to the soundtrack for the movie “Bhoot.”

The music and background soundtracks for several popular Bollywood movies, including “Ab Tak Chhappan” (2004), “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi” (2004), “Dhoom” (2004), “Neal ‘N’ Nikki” (2005), “Kaal” (2005), “Krrish” (2006), and “Fashion,” were later composed by him (2008).

Salim is not only a gifted musician and vocalist, but he has also donated his voice to many popular Bollywood movies and albums. A significant hit in 2014 was his song “Ishq Wala Love,” which was featured in the movie “Student of the Year.” He and his brother are in charge of the Bollywood adaptations of Lady Gaga’s songs “Judas” and “Born This Way.” They collaborated on the score for the Hollywood movie “Sold” as well as the Enrique song “I’m A Freak.” Both Seasons 5 and 6 of “Indian Idol” had him as a judge.
