Prakash Jha Biography
Prakash Jha Education
His primary education was completed at Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 in Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand, and Sainik School Tilaya, Koderma district. He left Ramjas College, Delhi University, in the first year of his BSc Physics programme to pursue an artistic career, and he then relocated to Mumbai.
Prakash Jha Early Life
Jha was born on February 27, 1952, in Bihar, India’s west Champaran area. He was preparing for JJ School of Arts when he unintentionally wandered onto the Dharma set (1973). This motivated him to pursue a career in film, and in 1973 he enrolled at Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) to study film editing. Due to student unrest, the institute was shut down for a while, but Jha wasted little time in traveling to Mumbai and starting production on his documentary. Before the show was finished, he left.
For his first feature film, Hip Hip Hurray, in 1984, Prakash Jha collaborated with actress Deepti Naval as a director. The two formally split up in 2002. The couple’s daughter, Disha Jha, is a producer and assistant director.
Prakash Jha Career
Prakash Jha aspires to receive praise from both critics and fans alike. He has proven it by creating films that are both emotionally compelling and commercially successful. He attended film school for for one year before starting to edit movies on his own. He made his début in 1975 with the film Under the Blue. He continued to make documentaries for some time. In 1984, he created the highly explosive documentary Faces after Storm on the “Bihar Sharif Riots.” Despite being prohibited mere days after its premiere, it won the National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film.
In 1984, Gulzar made his directorial debut with Hip Hip Hurray, which he wrote the script for. He received the All India Film Awards Association’s Best Director prize for the movie, which also starred Raj Kiran and Dipti Naval. After that, in 1984, he produced and directed Damul, which was nominated for the Best Film Filmfare Critics Award and the National Film Award. Parinati, his second movie, was released in 1986 and was based on a Vijaydan Detha novel. It won the National Film Award for Best Costume Design and was recognised as an outstanding movie at the London Film Festival in 1988.
Ajay Devgn and Gracy Singh appeared in his 2003 action film Gangaajal, which was both commercially and critically successful. At the National Film Awards, it also won the gold for “Best Film on Other Social Issues.” The film’s 2016 sequel, Jai Gangaajal, starring Priyanka Chopra, failed to live up to the high standards set by critics and moviegoers.
Prakash Jha established Prakash Jha Productions in the 1980s, and the company’s debut movie, Hip Hip Hurray, was released in 1983. Since then, this studio has produced movies like Damul (1984), Parinati (1986), Mrityudand (1997), Dil Kya Kare (1999), Gangaajal (2003), and Apaharan (2005), to name just a few (2005).
A follow-up to his 2003 film Gangaajal, in which he also starred, Jha’s 2016 film Jai Gangaajal is a sequel. Although the film’s predecessor performed well at the box office, this sequel received unimpressive reviews due to its formulaic story. In 2019, his upcoming album Saand Ki Aankh is anticipated to be published.
