Nagraj Manjule Biography

Nagraj Manjule Education

After earning his M.A. in Marathi literature from the University of Pune, he went on to earn a master’s degree in communication studies from the New Arts, Science and Commerce College in Ahmednagar.

Nagraj Manjule Early Life

Manjule was raised in the Solapur district village of Jeur in Maharashtra. He belongs to the Waddar tribe of Dravidians, which is typically nomadic. Manjule was greatly influenced by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the founder of the Indian constitution and an advocate for the oppressed. His own experiences as a Dalit growing up in rural Maharashtra have a significant impact on his films.

Nagraj Manjule Career

Pistulya, his first short film, which received a National Award, is an account of his “felt experience.” In the film, a young Dalit boy aspires to attend school but is prevented from doing so by his family’s financial situation and the widespread disapproval of formal education in his community. Fandry, which in the Kaikadi language translates as “pig,” was released to the general public in February 2014.

Sairat, Manjule’s second movie, had its world premiere at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival. It discusses discrimination based on caste and the practise of honour killing, which is still prevalent in some regions of India, such as Fandry and Pistulya. Archie (Archana Patil), the female lead of Sairat, has received positive reviews from both critics and the general public. Sairat also seeks to examine how women fit into society. Sairat is now the highest-grossing Marathi film of all time. Manjule made his directorial debut in Hindi film with Amitabh Bachchan’s Jhund. 2019’s Marathi Kaun Banega Crorepati was hosted by Manjule.
