Nimrat Kaur was born into a Sikh family in Pilani, Rajasthan. Rubina, her younger sister, is a psychologist who works in Bangalore. Major Bhupinder Singh, SC, her father, was an Indian Army officer. Her family resided in Patiala, where she went to Yadavindra Public School. Kashmiri terrorists abducted and killed her father in 1994. She later grew up and attended Delhi Public School in the Noida neighbourhood of Delhi after her family moved there. Later, she continued her education at the Shri Ram College of Commerce of Delhi University, where she graduated with honours in business and a B.Com.

The 2006 English film One Night with the King, which was filmed in Rajasthan, provided Nimrat Kaur her debut acting part. Anurag Kashyap directed Peddlers (2012), her debut Hindi movie.
