Ayan Mukerji decided against pursuing an undergraduate degree and instead chose to pursue a career as a Bollywood film director. He approached the director Ashutosh Gowariker, his brother-in-law, in 2003, and Gowariker hired him as an assistant director for the 2004 Hindi movie Swades. Shah Rukh Khan and Ayan claim to have become close friends after meeting on the shooting of the movie Swades.
