He was educated at St. Bede’s Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai. Gnanavel Raja’s wife is Neha Gnanavel, a costume designer in the Tamil film industry. Kousalya and V K Eswaran, a daughter, are his parents. During his school years, he frequently skipped class to watch movies at the nearby Devi or Sathyam cinema halls because he wanted to become a film producer.
