Although he was born in Nagpur, his father was a dentist in Delhi. He enrolled at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune not long after graduating from high school.

Rehana, also known as Mukta, was the bride of his union. His daughters are Muskaan Ghai, who is younger, and Meghna Ghai puri, who is older.
