When she was only eight years old, Urvashi made her acting debut in the Malayalam children’s movie Vidarunna Mottukal. She co-starred with Mammootty in the 1984 movie Ethirppukal, which marked her breakthrough as a leading lady. Urvashi’s early performances in films like Ente Ammu, Ninte Thulasi, Avarude Chakki, Nirakkoottu, Yuvajanotsavam, Sukhamo Devi, and Desatanakkili Karayarilla solidified her reputation as one of the most innovative and promising young actresses of her generation, not just in the Malayalam film industry but also in other South Indian film industries.
Between 1980 and 1990, she made appearances in nearly sixty Malayalam movies, nearly forty Tamil movies, and roughly twenty Kannada and Telugu movies. She made her long-awaited return to Malayalam in the family drama Achuvinte Amma by Sathyan Anthikkad, which tells the story of the unique bond between a mother and daughter who are both fiercely loved and guarded. The movie was well-received when it first came out and went on to become a box office success. Urvashi won the first National Film Award (for Best Supporting Actress) for her work in the movie. The following year, she co-starred with Jayaram in the comedy-drama Madhuchandralekha, which was a box-office hit despite receiving mixed reviews. Thanks to her work in the movie, Urvashi broke a previous record by taking home the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress for a record-breaking fifth time.
