Vijay grew up with a strong passion for acting and drama. Thus, he started taking part in a dramatic club during his college career. He later moved to Mumbai and started performing at NSD.

After hearing him perform at NSD under the careful supervision of renowned theatre artist Naseeruddin Shah, Mahesh Mathai hired him for his 1999 film Bhopal Express. He also had a small role in the Ram Gopal Verma-directed film Jungle.
