He attended BSP Senior Secondary School, Sector-IV (SSS-IV) in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh (then Madhya Pradesh). He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Physics with honours from the University of Mumbai and intended to pursue further training in cinematography at the FTII in Pune. But while he was in Mumbai, he was able to get experience in the film and television industry by working on a range of sets and crews. Basu joined Tara as an assistant director under Raman Kumar in order to continue her film career.

Anurag Basu Career

Anurag Basu, who has directed movies including “Life in a Metro,” “Gangster,” and “Barfi!”, is one of the most sought-after filmmakers in Indian cinema. He entered the entertainment business in his mid-20s by working as an assistant director on more than 70 episodes of the TV show Tara. He started off by directing the pilots for other shows like Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, and Kasautii Zindagii Kay after directing the daily soap Koshish…Ek Aashaa for Balaji Telefilms in 2000.

Kuchh To Hai, a 2003 horror thriller, was Basu’s first filmmaking gig; however, he left mid-production and was replaced by Anil V. Kumar. The critically panned John Abraham and Tara Sharma movie Saaya was produced by director Basu in collaboration with Vishesh Films. Murder (2004), his second film as a director, was well received despite its “A” rating and explicit sexual content, which at the time were both novel for an Indian audience.

After the success of Murder, Basu released Gangster, which gave Kangana Ranaut her first significant acting role. The movie and its music were both huge box office hits. One of Anurag’s most well-known movies, Barfi!, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, and Ileana D’Cruz, is still in theatres today. It is about a deaf and mute child who befriends an autistic girl. The performances received widespread recognition at film festivals. In 2017, Ranbir Kapoor and Basu collaborated once again on the action musical Jagga Jasoos, which marked Kapoor’s debut as a producer in front of the camera.
